Happy Earthly New Year!

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

It's here! The Full Moon in Cancer and lunar eclipse happen at exactness today (2:13 pm EST). With a lunar eclipse, the Earth moves between the Sun and Moon, casting its shadow on the Moon. The Moon, then, is not reflecting the Sun's light. The Moon in Cancer (home, oceanic depths, the soul's womb beginnings) are mixed with the Earth's real currents. This blocks out the Sun in Capricorn, and the materialist view, the social conditioning, the purely rational.

It's a chance to just be, and see, without the overbearing vibe of what's been overlaid (by society) on who we are. It can be very soulful and emotional! Saturn's scythe brings major changes in relationships. We may lose ties that keep us from being who we are. Readers, this happened to me yesterday, when a cousin decided to "Hide" my feeds from Facebook. She said she was offended by my posts, one that disturbed the whole clan that questioned the premise of war. I come out of a heavy southern tradition of great emotional investment in God and guns, and the two often go together. But she also didn't like the "earthly" ones in particular. While it's hard for me to disappoint family, I see this Full Moon/Lunar eclipse as that kind of profound crossroads. Where we bid farewell (perhaps with some sentimental sadness), to the past, and let our hearts be fresh and open to the new.

This Full Moon bathes us in the shadow of the Earth's depths. Last night, in the class Springing Karma, Mark Borax talked of Capricorn as the sea-goat with the mermaid tail, "that moves in deep psychic emotive currents in the water." And that we're now being asked to allow our souls to plunge to the root, to commune with the Earth's ancient history and rhythm. That 2010 will take our spirits high, with incredible energies coming into the Crown chakra. This brings the "X-Factor" of surprises, and sudden illuminations that await us. But that there's an equal settling into our bodies and relationship to the Earth, in this marriage of heaven and Earth.

So, I wish you a fabulous good time, on the cusp of this most significant year. Tonight there may be intensity and it's good to be aware of personal safety. But the sudden events of the eclipse could be good ones, too. Like being proposed to, or having an old love return. News of a new baby, or "change of heart" about your life purpose or career. It's about opening the heart and aligning with the heart beat of the Earth. Here's hoping we find our way in 2010, with courage and trust, with our new hearts leading the way!

More Fire, Earth, Water or Air in 2010?

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

This year, I'm keeping my New Year's resolution simple -- more fire! I tend to favor the watery go with the flow vibe of my Sun and Rising signs. I'd like to move more, speak my truth more (even if it provokes), and spend more time at the creative edge. Perhaps it's about taking one risk per day that scares me (in a good way).

Is there an element that's calling out for your attention? It might be a gift in your birth chart you know you've yet to actualize. Things are changing quickly, and maybe for you, it's working on being more grounded. Being in balance with the earth element helps you compost what's breaking down, into something new.

I like the idea of keeping life simple, and finding connection with the Earth through the elements. It's the wind in your hair, the packed layer of decomposing leaves of winter, snow for some, and the crackling fire. We have within us each of the four elements, and need a nice balance of them all to feel whole.

Here's some inspiration for each element to get you started:

A Powerful Time for Resolutions

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Resolutions are "promises to ourselves," says M. Kelley Hunter, in her post on the Blue Moon and New Year's Eclipse. This Full Moon, she says, brings powerful closure, that frees us to live more fully in the moment. She writes, "This eclipse seeks to short-circuit automatic memory trails of the past (and aren't we all losing our memories!?) in favor of be-here-now pragmatic choices that foster growth based on the current situation, reflecting the realistic light of the Capricorn Sun."

It's a Full Moon in Cancer, the sign of the Mother, home and family. Hunter points out that the Moon and Venus (in Capricorn) are in opposition, engaging the force of the feminine. Venus' power is diminished, however, in the glare of the Sun, which she writes, "does not bode well for the economic situation, as Venus rules the financial world." I love her interpretation here, that Venus, so near Pluto, the "planet of let-go-and-let-goddess," is inviting us to "rebuild with love." It's just the start of the process, she points out, saying, "An overhaul is in order for another decade and a half. The necessity is to rebuild, to regenerate from the Earth upward into human civilization"

There may be dramatic severing of ties, with Saturn in Libra, in a square. Hunter says we're seeing the face of the Crone, the Dark Goddess that beckons us to die to our old ways of being. In this stripping down, resolutions might simply be to let go, even though we're so unsure where it's leading.

What is a Blue Moon?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Like most people, I've always thought is was the 2nd Full Moon in a month. But according to Canadian astrologer Wendy Guy, that's a popular misconception that came from an article in Sky and Telescope Magazine in 1946. Writes Wendy in Blue Moon Lunacy, "Ironically, it was a 1999 article in the same magazine that discovered and corrected the mistake, but by that time the media, Internet, and even the Trivial Pursuit game, had proliferated the incorrect definition and now most of the world understands an incorrect, if persistent, definition of 'Blue Moon.'"

In her essay, Wendy writes that 19th-century lore described the Blue Moon as the 3rd Full Moon in a season that has 4 Full Moons. As it stands now, the popularized Blue Moon (2nd in a month) happens every 2 1/2 years or so, and it's the same with the Victorian-era definition. I last wrote about a Blue Moon in May of 2007. Some says Wendy, still hold to the definition of the visual effect of the Moon actually being blue. This happens when there's volcanic ash in the atmosphere as with after Krakatoa blew, and during forest fires. That gives more rarity to that phrase, "Once in a Blue Moon...."

So, you could say the Blue Moon is a relatively modern myth that is now woven into our culture. I'll be attending a "Once in a Blue Moon" yoga class and potluck on Thursday night, then sitting by the fire with my man. I'm sure many of you will be gathering with friends or family. The Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse looks to be intense, where rare events are possible. It kicks off a year that's sure to bring startling sights, in a time like no other.
